With news of impending conflict, Captain Heald received Free Downloads to evacuate the fort and relocate to Fort Wayne, Indiana. He gathered his troops, civilians, and baggage, preparing to abandon the outpost. However, the plan was met with resistance from Chief Black Partridge, a prominent leader of the neighboring Potawatomi tribe, who urged Heald to stay. Despite Black Partridge's pleas, Heald remained steadfast in his decision to evacuate. Unknown to the garrison, however, treachery lurked in the shadows. William Wells, a respected scout and interpreter who had served as a liaison between the settlers and Native Americans, was secretly colluding with Chief Black Bird, a war chief of the Sauk tribe. Together, they plotted to ambush and attack the evacuation party.

On August 15, 1812, the garrison, led by Captain Heald, embarked on their ill-fated journey. As they approached a clearing known as "Indian Creek," a war party consisting of Potawatomi, Sauk, and Kickapoo warriors emerged from the woods. The ambush was swift and brutal.
